Fitting Directions:
Step 1: Fitting - Try in one of the two Mouth Guards on the upper arch of the teeth. Lightly bite into the guard to feel the fit. Remove. Now try in the second Mouth Guard. Alternate between the two to determine which one fits the curve of your mouth most comfortably. It is not required that the guard completely cover all the teeth to the very back. It is more important for comfort that you closely fit the curve of your mouth with the lease excess material.
Step 2: Boiling - Boil water, once water begins to boil take it away from the heat and let stand for 30 seconds. Place the Mouth Guard in the hot water For 80 seconds for large guards (blue) and 30 seconds for small guards (Pink, Black, Clear).
Step 3: Molding - Remove the Mouth Guard from the hot water with a spoon or other utensil. Immediately, place guard in your mouth. While looking in a mirror, center channel around the upper teeth, the guard will be warm, but will not burn. When the upper teeth are centered in the channel, bite gently into the guard and suck out the air and water in the guard by pressing tongue against the back insides of the upper teeth. Use fingers to press in the outside walls of the guard against the teeth and gums. Leave guard in place for 30 seconds, then remove and place under cold water.
If you did not get a good fit allow the guard to cool fully and repeat the steps above.
If the Mouth Guard feels too large and/or bulky trim off the excess material with regular household scissors. Smooth roughness out of the cut edges using a fingernail emery board.
Step 4: Cleaning- To clean your Mouth Guard rinse with water and brush with toothpaste. When not in use store in plastic container. Replace when Mouth Guard shows signs of wear.
Q: Do you need to boil the mouth guard for fitting?
A: Yes, these are a heat in boiling water and bite register impression
system. What makes these uniquely superior for fit is a combination of materials
that allows for a bite impression deep enough to create a suction tight fit,
unlike conventional boil and bite sports guards made of a single layer material.
Thank you for asking.
Q: I grind my teeth at night but ware braces, can I still use your Mouth Guard?
A: These Mouth Guards were not intended for use with orthodontic braces. Please consult an orthodontist if wearing braces
Q: Can you tell me if these will work for my 10 year old child who is
grinding their teeth while sleeping?
A: These are not for children under 12 years of age. and/or not
for use with orthodontic braces. Please consult a pedodontist or orthodontist
for children who grind their teeth.
Q: Some sellers advertise a night guard that doesn't require boiling.
As a dental hygienist can you explain what that means in regards to my selecting
a mouth guard for best fit?
A: I will try to explain as briefly as possible, the difference between a
boil bite and form fit mouth guard and the direct fit models. Comfortable Fit!
That is the primary difference in all basic mouth guards regardless if used for
sports or to cushion teeth when clenching. All mouth guards separate the teeth
to defuse muscle and joint stress while protecting the teeth from excessive wear
and discomfort.
The best fitting mouth guards are the very expensive dental guards made by a
dentist or dental lab from bite impressions of your teeth. These custom guards
fit your teeth like a tight glove with no extra material or bulk to obtain
maximum comfort.
The most difficult mouth guards to match fit over the teeth are the one size
fits all non-boil bite all formed guards. These one size fits all guards assume
all mouths are one size! In fact, mouths vary in size/shape and are as uniquely
individual as fingersprints. If you are that one exact sized mouth, or very
close to it, then you get an accepable fit, but all other mouth sizes will
suffer from over or under sizing. This makes finding a comfort matched fit
somewhat more of a gamble with non-boil type guards.
The boil and bite guards offer the ideal compromise! By using a combination of
materials that allows for a bite impression deep enough to create a suction
tight fit on the inside, like the expensive custom guards, and placing that in
an outer material that is a more general fit so it can be formed/shaped at home.
Boil and bite guards offer the best, most comfortable fit, with the most cost
savings! Thank you for your question.
